Five Things You Need To Know While Choosing A Gold Chain

Gold chains are charming jewellery that never goes out of style. Since ancient times, Roman emperors have used gold chains, and to this day, it remains an important piece of jewellery for both men and women.

Before you buy a gold chain,  several important factors to consider, including whether the chain is solid gold, what karat it is, and what kind of links the chain is designed with.

When buying a gold chain, you should pay attention to some of the most important characteristics below.

Choose Karat for your gold chain

When deciding what carat your gold chain should be, remember that the purer the gold, the softer and less durable it will be.

Therefore, if you wear chain every day, you may skip the 20Kt and 22Kt pieces, which will scratch more easily compared with 10Kt or 14Kt chains, which are harder since they contain a higher percentage of non-gold alloys.

Although low-carat gold is more durable, it is not recommended if you are allergic to nickel.

18-carat gold is ideal for allergy sufferers because it does not cause skin allergic reactions.

Know what type of Gold chain you are looking for

You have the choice of real gold or gold plated. We recommend that you buy a real gold chain. Gold-plated jewellery is much cheaper and in some cases can be a decent option. However, gold-plated jewellery is not considered real gold. It may look nice at first but is prone to wear, tarnish, and rust. Over time you will need to pay to have your gold chain re-plated.

Real gold (10k and above) is much more durable and is a better choice for everyday use. In addition, gold-plated chains do not have much resale value. You can always sell real gold for at least scrap value. This makes it both a stylish piece of jewellery and an investment that can increase.

In addition, there are solid and hollow chains. Hollow chains are lighter and cheaper, but less durable and more prone to denting. If you eventually break the chain, it can be difficult to fix.

Chain thickness-Know what it is for

The thickness of the chain should be considered not only for aesthetic purposes but also for practical reasons. Some gold chains are made very thick, and some gold chains are designed very thin to make the appearance simple.

If you want to buy a gold chain to hold the pendant, make sure that the chain is fairly thick and can bear the weight of the pendant. Chains that are too thin are easy to tangle and twist, but they are ideal for holding lightweight accessories.

On the other hand, the thicker chain is very durable and can hold a moderately sized pendant. If you are worried about maintaining a beautiful appearance while still wearing a durable gold chain, choose a chain with a thickness of 1.2mm to 3mm.

 Choose your chain length

You don't want to be choked to death because your jewellery is too short, and you don't want to get tangled together because it is too long.

Chains ranging from 14 to 22 inches are the most common for regular wear.

A shorter chain is suitable for day and night use and is more comfortable if you plan to wear the chain during sleep. By the way, it is not recommended that you wear a gold chain when you sleep, because it may cause sleep marks on the skin and may damage the gold due to bending or dents.

Longer chains are best for outdoor wear parties. They are more obstructive than short chains, so they are best suited for special occasions.

The Clasp Matters

There are many kinds of clasps, some are functional and some are for style.

The clasp can be easily replaced, but it is best to start with a good clasp. Usually, the lobster clasp is the best choice because it is safe and easy to open. It will not accidentally open like some cheap clasps. When the clasp breaks it puts you at risk of losing your chain if it falls off your neck.

Buying a gold chain is not rocket science. All you need to do is ask the right questions and conduct the proper checks. This is especially true if you are buying your product online. Since you do not have the privilege of physically viewing the chain, you can eliminate most of the guesswork about its quality by judging the gold chain based on these factors.
